Hi-ho! Hi-ho! It's off to work I go! (5- 55)

What is your opinion of Winston's primary task at work? Is his job necessary for the smooth operation of Oceania? What purpose does his job serve? (see #17)

  1. He "re-writes" history to make sure it conforms with Big Brother's version of events. If something happens which later conflicts with a claim made my Big Brother, Winston simply "fixes" it so that the story he just created becomes the actual history. After all, as Winston himself asks, where does history exist? The natural answer is in records and in the memories of the people. But if both are controlled by the Party, then is it really the truth? Remember, who controls the present, controls the past! I see that as a bumber sticker slogan...

  2. Winston’s job is basically to falsify documents. He lies to the public by changing the stories in past editions of newspapers. The reason Winston does this is to make everything that Big Brother reports to the general public look and sound true. Big Brother has his own agenda, and he needs people like Winston to serve his agenda. The operation of Oceania depends on these tasks only because the government (Big Brother and the four ministries) has placed so many severe restrictions on Oceania. These restrictions have harsh penalties (most of them death) that people are afraid to speak out (or speak at all). Winston’s job is a very dishonest job. It seems as though he does not understand that he is doing a job that is amoral and only serves to help a tyrannical government.

While the lies that are produced by Winston’s job may seem to help the population in some odd, make you feel better about the world kind of way, it also hurts them. They will openly accept all of what they see and hear as the truth, and if whatever they see or hear are altered in some way; they will accept that as the new truth. The lies will minimize any need for thought or intelligence. These lies are the basis of a form of slavery. It’s like training a dog to do your bidding by starving it and only letting it eat when it does what you want. Winston’s job is important, mostly to Big Brother.

  3. My opinion of Winston’s primary task at work is that Winston has a job that comes out to be very important to the city of Oceania. I think that it’s amazing that Winston Smith is able to change the records and history of the past in order to change the future with just the sound of his voice. I agree that Winston’s job is necessary for the smooth operation of Oceania. This is because whenever “The Party” wants history in the past to be changed or disappeared, Winston must do it or he’ll be vaporized from the city. For example, in the story “The Party” changed the fact that in the past Oceania was in an alliance with Eurasia, but in war with Eastasia. The Party did not want people to know that they were once in an alliance with Eurasia. They easily changed the past by telling Winston to do his job. The purpose that his job serves is that he must change the past to whatever the “The Party” wants it to be. The past is easily made forgotten by almost everyone in the world. From the reading that I’ve done, the “Big Brother” and “The Party” controls the past and the present. Winston Smith usually changes history about subjects that have happen recently or long ago. Winston job is also to write in actual articles for the people of the city to read and know. Whatever the Party does not like in the past, they command Winston to do his work and change it to what they want.

  4. yes his job is imporotant because it helps keep order and it helps big brother maintain control of the people and keep an order over the aera that he can control. his job is to make changes to the past inorder to help maintain the balance that is set before them. he helps big brother by making sure that if he saies one thing but want to change it he goes back into the records and all other written record so that no one will be able to say that what big brother saies and does are to diffrent thigs. he makes it so that if information needs to be changed it is done. this also protects people from being vaporized and from being erased from history.he makes it so that the past is forgotten so easily that it is made acceptable by everyone in the town to just with the flow and the party is happy with the people just being lied to.with winston rewriting history they are ok with lying to people.

  5. Winston’s primary job in Oceana is to basically rewrite history, so that all the speeches that BB gives are true and accurate in every way. He goes through the books and changes what they said into what BB will say. When he makes a mistake, the upper level sends him a message telling him to rectify or change what he has done. BB or Big Brother wants to change history and rewrite it in his own way and with his own words. He wants to do this so that he is viewed as the top ruler of Oceana. I do think that his job is essential for the flow of Oceana. If he did not rewrite history to what BB is going to say then BB would be wrong. Even though Winston is just doing his job he is still wrong. He is wrong because he is changing history and deceiving his fellow “comrades”. Even though he is writing lies, it is only a matter of time before the people believe everything that is written. Soon it will be almost impossible to tell what is truth and what is fiction. This is Winstons primary job in Oceana. One thing I have noticed is that he does not get paid for what he does. I have however read that he brought the diary with money. I find it pointless if someone works so hard under an oppressive ruler and does not get paid.

  6. In Oceania there is Big Brother, the inner party, the outer party, and then the proles. 85% of the population is made up of proles. The inner and outer party is like the higher positioned population. They are the only people that work with Big Brother. Out of the different types of groups/organization Winston is in the outer party. He works in a small cubicle in a office next to other comrades. Winston’s job is to correct paste references of Big Brother so that Big Brother is always right. He goes through books, newspapers, speeches, quotes, and etc. All types of literature can be altered at anytime for the government’s purposes. He doing this is really important to keep a smooth operation in Oceania. I say that because if Big Brother was wrong, then more and more comrades would be against him. If that happened then it can lead to an all out rebellion against Big Brother and his government. So you can say that the purpose in his work is to keep Big Brother looking like a good ruler, a savior even to his people and not like a lying, cheating, and awful ruler that he really is. Crazy thing is that in Winston’s line of work it’s very competitive. Another comrade next to him can get the same assignment. So later Big Brother’s other workers would choose whoever’s version of the alteration is much more acceptable. I know of this from pages 40 to 41.

  7. I think his main task is to make sure things are in order. Make sure Big Brothers rules are being followed. His job is to make sure that the stories in the past are altered. So basiclly he is lieing to everyone. That is what his job causes him to do. So yes his job is very important. Winston has to make sure that everything is up to par in Big Brothers eyes. Helps Big Brother keep order in his city.

  8. I feel winston primary task is to keep the proles of Oceania from knowing the truth. I feel this way because he is in charge of changing the past and records. His job is necessary to big brother but I feel when it comes to being necessary to winston it is not. I feel it is necessary to big brother because as long as he keep the society of Oceania on lock and in ignorance everything will go according to his plan. I feel as though that big brother knows if he didnt change records then the proles would eventually get the hint that they are under dictatorship. I feel it is not necessary for winston because he believes in the same beliefs as Goldstein.Winston wants the truth to be out and he believes that Oceanis three slogans should be demolished. So basically the purpose of his job is to keep big brother in as much in control of everything and keep the proles which are majority of Oceania in an ignorant state of mind.

  9. A Utopia is a perfect or an ideal place. I don't believe that any utopia would ever exist, but the closest thing to it would be land far away. It would be a relaxing area and i would be surrounded by all my friend and loved one's. Another section of the utopia would have an area of fun such as amusement rides. Another part of the utopia would have an area where you can play basketball, football and baseball. The most important part of the utopia would be that everyone would get along, no one would argue and people only should have fun. This my utopia.

  10. Winston’s job at work is to go through what big brother said before and change it as it applies to what big brother says now. It makes the people think that everything is as big brother says. Let’s say that big brother once said that they are at war with Cuba. But now Cuba is big brothers closes allies. So Winston goes to work at the ministry of truth, and he speaks into the microphone and and says what needs to be corrected. The papers then goes down a tube were it is burned and never talked about again. Winton even erases people as well. Never to be spoke of again. Only Winston knows what he does as far as in Oceania, like the proles or the other members of the outer party which Winston is a part of. Winston’s job is necessary to smooth things over in Oceania. If it wasn’t for Winston I think that big brother would lose control of the people. The people would find out that big brother is always contradicting himself. I feel as though Winston’s job is the most important job in Oceania, if he says the wrong thing one day it could be complete chaos. He has the power to destroy big brother if he wanted to, because all he has to say it that big brother is a lie and it will be rewritten, and the people have no choice to believe it.

  11. Winston's job of editing the past is crucial to the agenda of big brother. In order for people to unquestionably believe in big brother, he must display himself as a positive, omniscient being, and by editing the past, this is accomplished. What I don’t understand is why aren't more people that see the editing, deleting, and rephrasing of the past everyday do not rebel against big brother as Winston has? I mean, the evidence of big brother's lies is clearly visible to them, yet they still believe in him. I'm sorry, but all this novel does for me is truly believe that stupidity and proof less theories aka religion will be the downfall of humanity. People these days tend to accept laws and persecutions without questioning authority. I only believe what my senses tell me. That’s all we truly can believe in this world. Take the bible for instance, how is it possible for an educated person to believe that a man lived inside of a whale’s stomach for a month? Really!?! If you look back over the past 100-200 years, most of the conflicts in this world have been religiously based. I believe religion was needed at one point in time, but for the human race to expand past the horizons that we are limited by today, blind faith must be eradicated from existence. And you want to know something even more interesting? The only person that knows if the bible was any accurate is the poor monk or most likely businessman that took the time to FABRICATE the damn thing, and in the case of 1984, he would be Winston.
